No Clear Contenders Emerge Ahead of Briars Ward By-Election

Eligible Briars Ward voters have until 4pm today, Wednesday 22 July, to enrol or update their details ahead of the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council by-election.

The race to replace former councillor Anthony Marsh remains wide open, with no clear contenders publicly declaring their intention to run.

STPL News has spoken with local contacts across the Mornington Peninsula, but no obvious candidate has emerged.

Enrolment Closes at 4pm

Residents already enrolled at their current Briars Ward address should automatically appear on the electoral roll.

Some property owners, occupiers and company representatives may also qualify to vote, but must enrol before today’s deadline.

The Victorian Electoral Commission will conduct the election entirely by post, with voting closing at 6pm on Friday 2 October.

Open Race for Key Council Seat

Marsh resigned from Mornington Peninsula Shire Council after winning the state seat of Nepean.

His departure leaves Briars Ward, covering Mornington, Mount Martha and surrounding areas, without a councillor.

The successful candidate could influence closely contested decisions on planning, infrastructure, housing, coastal management and Council spending.

Attention Turns to Nominations

The field should become clearer once nominations open.

Until then, Briars Ward remains one of the Peninsula’s most unpredictable council contests.
