
I find it amazing that Melbourne roads that were constructed 50, 60 or 70 years ago are still serving us well with minor ad-hoc maintenance. And yet roads that were laid 10 or 15 years ago require regular major maintenance and are often dug up completely to be re-laid (yes, I’m looking at you, Peninsula Link).
I would’ve thought that materials and processes had improved considerably over that period, but obviously not.
Or is it just plain incompetence?
