Letter to the Editor: Melbourne Roads

Wayne Murray, a Rye resident has raised concerns about the condition and durability of Melbourne’s road network, questioning why newer roads appear to require more frequent major repairs compared to older infrastructure.

I find it amazing that Melbourne roads that were constructed 50, 60 or 70 years ago are still serving us well with minor ad-hoc maintenance. And yet roads that were laid 10 or 15 years ago require regular major maintenance and are often dug up completely to be re-laid (yes, I’m looking at you, Peninsula Link).

I would’ve thought that materials and processes had improved considerably over that period, but obviously not.

Or is it just plain incompetence?

Totally agree with Mr Marrays article. They could build roads that lasted thousands of years in Roman Times yet find it impossible to build roads that last 100 years today! With modern technology and research! Or is the profit from ratepayers and taxpayers from degradation and continued maintenance!?
