After six years and four months of waiting, Frankston mother Kayla Hehir has finally received her daughter Talon’s death certificate — a small but long-awaited step in a case that continues to raise questions about transparency, accountability and justice in Victoria.
The milestone brings limited comfort. While it formally recognises the death of eight-month-old Talon Jai-Grace Hehir, the Victorian Government has refused Kayla’s request for a coronial inquest, leaving her and her family still fighting for answers.

Kayla’s fight for justice continues
In an update shared on the Justice for Talon Change.org petition by the organiser, Sherele Moody of Australian Femicide Watch and the Red Heart Campaign confirmed that receiving her daughter’s death certificate was “one small step forward”, but that the “fight is far from over”.
The Coroners Court of Victoria declined to hold an inquest into Talon’s 2019 death, despite repeated requests from Kayla and growing public support. Determined to overturn the decision, she will meet with a coronial lawyer next week to explore her legal options.

Both Domestic and Family Violence Minister Natalie Hutchins and Attorney-General Sonya Kilkenny have declined to meet with Kayla about the case.
“It’s been six years since my baby girl was murdered. I will not stop until there is justice for Talon,” she wrote.
Petition passes 5,381 signatures
The Justice for Talon petition has now reached 5,381 signatures on Change.org.
Supporters say the refusal to hold an inquest denies the family — and the public — an opportunity to understand what happened and whether systemic failures played a role.

Advocates continue to call on the Victorian Government and Coroners Court to review the decision and ensure transparency in the investigation.
Podcast shares Talon’s story
Kayla’s story is also featured in the She Matters podcast, also by Sherele Moody, which discusses domestic and family violence, women’s safety, and the fight for justice for victims and their families.
