Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor, Cr Stephen Batty, is calling on golfers, local businesses and residents to support The Mayoral Charity Golf Day, a fundraising event aimed at combating homelessness across the Mornington Peninsula.

The Mornington Peninsula has the highest rate of homelessness in Victoria, with long-term rental vacancies scarce and available properties out of reach for many residents.

Cr Batty said homelessness was affecting local families and elderly residents, some of whom were being forced to sleep in cars and on foreshores. He said all funds raised would go directly to local support centres working to get people off the street and into safe housing.

The event will feature a four-ball Ambrose golf competition and a silent auction. Local businesses can sponsor a hole for $2,000, which includes two branded signs, a complimentary lunch and the option to enter a team of four golfers for the price of three. Businesses can also donate items or gift vouchers to the auction.

Golfers can register for $250, covering a round of golf and lunch. Those wishing to support the cause without playing can attend lunch only for $100.

All proceeds will go to community support centres in Rosebud, Mornington and Hastings, assisting people experiencing homelessness across the Mornington Peninsula.
