Crib Point Primary School has taken first place in the 2026 Inter School Activity Challenge, which brought Grade 5 students from primary schools across Western Port to Hastings.
The Rotary Club of Somerville Tyabb hosted the event at BlueScope Western Port last week.
Now in its eighth year, the annual challenge gives local students a hands-on opportunity to put their design, teamwork and problem-solving skills to the test.
The event also drew a strong turnout, with students gathering to build their entries and watch the bridges face the ultimate test.
Western Port Students Put Bridges To The Test
This year’s Inter School Activity Challenge tasked students with designing and building the strongest bridge.
Once construction finished, judges put each bridge through a progressively tougher strength test.
They added weights to the bridges until the structures eventually collapsed. The bridge capable of supporting the greatest load achieved the strongest result.
However, strength was not the only consideration.
If two bridges achieved the same result, judges would use appearance and aesthetics as the deciding factor.
The testing provided plenty of anticipation as students watched to see how much weight their designs could withstand.
Crib Point Primary Takes First Place
After the bridge testing, Crib Point Primary School claimed first place in this year’s competition.
Flinders CC finished second, while Somerville Rise Primary School placed third.
The challenge gave Grade 5 students a practical way to explore how design and construction can affect the strength of a structure.
It also brought primary schools from across Western Port together for another year of the local competition.
