Somerville residents turned out in force on Friday, 22 August, for the official launch of Helping Hands Somerville, a new community food pantry already making a major impact in the town.
The event began with a Welcome to Country, followed by words of support from Kim Fitcher of Somerville Community House. Local volunteer and pantry co-founder Anne then addressed the crowd, delivering an emotional speech reflecting on the group’s journey from idea to reality.

A community need answered
“It seemed such a long time ago that Deb, Gail and myself talked about the number of people in our community going hungry,”
Anne told attendees.
“In the first week, we assisted at least 30 families by providing free nutritious food that was rescued and donated. The word spread quickly and we are now assisting at least 120 families every week.”
Anne explained that the pantry operates on the principle of sharing food sustainably, respectfully and without stigma, with the support of Somerville Community House and countless volunteers.
Backed by volunteers and donors
In her speech, Anne paid tribute to:
“the many individuals and groups who provided assistance and support from the beginning — from helping us through the paperwork and red tape to setting up the venue, purchasing equipment and creating operational procedures.”
She also acknowledged the local businesses and food partners who now supply regular donations, ensuring shelves remain stocked for those in need.
“Our donors have been supported by dozens of eager community-minded individuals and groups,” she said.
Official opening
The speeches concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, led by Mornington Peninsula Shire Councillor Kate Roper, officially declaring Helping Hands Somerville open.

For Anne, the moment was overwhelming, with tears in her eyes as she thanked the community for embracing the project.
“Finally, thank you to all of you who have joined us today to celebrate this occasion,” she said.
The pantry, based at the Somerville Community House, will now continue its work providing free food to local families, backed by volunteers and supported by the broader community.
