Ben Carroll has become Victoria’s new Premier after Victorian Labor MPs unanimously elected him parliamentary leader on Tuesday.
Carroll replaces Jacinta Allan, who resigned as Premier and Labor leader after losing majority support within the parliamentary party.
Allan said she stepped aside to avoid a prolonged leadership contest four months before the Victorian state election. She publicly offered Carroll her full support.
Kilkenny Challenge Ends
Carrum MP Sonya Kilkenny briefly nominated for the leadership during the caucus meeting, preventing Carroll from immediately securing the position unopposed.
Kilkenny later withdrew, allowing caucus to endorse Carroll unanimously and avoid a wider ballot involving Labor members.
Gabrielle Williams Elected Deputy
Labor MPs elected Gabrielle Williams as deputy parliamentary leader and Victoria’s new Deputy Premier.
Carroll has promised a “new direction” for the government as Labor prepares for the state election on 28 November.
