The Victorian Liberals have pledged $250,000 to upgrade the Somerville CFA station if elected in November, promising new showers, accessible toilets and dedicated decontamination facilities for volunteer firefighters.
Liberal candidate for Hastings Frank Schiefler announced the commitment on 17 October, saying the funding would cover an extension to the station, including improved meeting spaces and a dedicated room where firefighters can safely remove potentially contaminated protective clothing.
The station also supports local schools, community groups and a Junior Brigade for young people aged 11 to 15.
Somerville CFA Welcomes Commitment
Somerville CFA Captain Josh Caron welcomed the announcement.
“The Somerville CFA welcomes Frank Schiefler’s commitment to fully fund these important change rooms and showers.”
Mr Schiefler said volunteers deserved better facilities.
“Somerville’s volunteer firefighters put themselves on the line for our community. They deserve a shower, an accessible toilet and a safe place to take off contaminated gear.”
He also criticised the State Government over funding for the project.
“Labor has left Somerville CFA with a funding black hole on this project. The Liberals will fully fund it.”
Questions Over Existing Funding
The commitment follows the latest round of the Victorian Government’s Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP), announced earlier this month.
Under the program, the State Government generally contributes $2 for every $1 provided by volunteer brigades.
However, the amount of funding already secured for Somerville CFA’s proposed upgrades, and the extent of any remaining shortfall, have not been independently confirmed.
The $250,000 pledge is conditional on the Liberal Party forming government following the 28 November state election.
