New Lights Officially Opened at Somerville Tennis Club

Somerville Tennis Club has officially opened new lights on courts 4–6, funded by a $100,000 State Government grant. The upgrade means all six courts are now available for night matches.

Somerville Tennis Club celebrated a major milestone on Sunday afternoon with the official opening of new court lighting, attended by Hastings MP Paul Mercurio and Cr Stephen Batty.

The $100,000 upgrade, funded through a State Government grant in partnership with Mornington Peninsula Shire Council and the club, has delivered new lights for courts four, five and six. The works mean all six courts can now be used for evening competition and social play.

Somerville Tennis Club President Karyn Dickens said the improved facilities would make a significant difference for members and the wider community.

Having all the courts under lights is wonderful for the club. On Monday nights our mixed competition usually fills all six courts, and the upgrade means play can continue well into the evening,” Ms Dickens said.

The installation of the new court lights began in June 2025.

The lights will also support the club’s two teams in the Tuesday night open competition, as well as its popular Thursday night social tennis sessions.

Our Thursday night social tennis starts at 7 pm, and it’s free for anyone who wants to come down and play,” Ms Dickens said.

With the new facilities now in place, the club is looking forward to expanding competitions and welcoming more local players.
