Police are appealing for witnesses after a red Mazda sped through a red light on Nepean Highway in Mornington, narrowly missing pedestrians at a busy crossing.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a speeding driver narrowly missed a group of pedestrians at a busy Mornington crossing earlier this month.

Pedestrians Dodge High-Speed Vehicle

The incident happened about 10.30 pm on Friday 3 October, when a red Mazda 121 (registration 1WG6OE) was seen travelling south on Nepean Highway near Main Street.

Red car parked with license plate 1WG60E.

Investigators say the car was clocked at 93 km/h in a 70 zone and failed to stop at a red light, speeding through the pedestrian crossing while five people were on it.

The group escaped without injury, but police say the outcome could easily have been tragic.

Witnesses Urged to Come Forward

Somerville Highway Patrol is leading the investigation and wants to speak with anyone who witnessed the near-miss or has dash-cam or mobile footage of the vehicle.

Detectives are particularly keen to hear from the five pedestrians involved, who may hold key information or footage from the scene.

Anyone who saw the vehicle or has footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Busy Road a Known Safety Concern
