Mount Eliza’s Saucy Suburban Rumour: Was It Really Victoria’s Swingers Capital?

A Reddit post has ignited fresh discussion about Mt Eliza’s rumoured swinging scene during the 1980s and 90s — with some saying the culture never left.

It started with a simple question on Reddit.

A user on r/morningtonpeninsula recently sparked a flurry of discussion with a bold claim: that Mt Eliza, known for its quiet affluence and leafy streets, was once Victoria’s swingers capital.

The post quickly gathered attention, prompting users to share memories, theories, and long-held whispers.

There were always stories about certain houses,” one local wrote. “Big parties, people coming and going… it was just known.”

The conversation soon spilled over into r/Melbourneswingers, a subreddit dedicated to adult lifestyles, where a second thread picked up steam. “I’ve been told from multiple random sources that Mount Eliza is the swingers capital of Victoria. Is there any truth to that or is it an urban legend?” the poster asked.

While many responses were tongue-in-cheek, some backed the claim, citing Mt Eliza’s privacy, wealth, and large homes as ideal for discreet social gatherings during the 1980s and 1990s. Others suggested alternative locations — including Box Hill.

Suburban Secrets

At its peak in the 80s and 90s, Mt Eliza was known for its exclusivity and privacy — two qualities that lend themselves well to low-profile social scenes. While no formal evidence of a “swingers circuit” has emerged, the strength and consistency of the anecdotes suggests there may be some truth behind the gossip.

One Reddit user described growing up nearby and overhearing adult conversations about “spa nights,” while another noted that real estate agents would sometimes allude to Mt Eliza’s social reputation when describing properties.

Although unverifiable, the persistence of these stories — vague, recurring and often repeated in hushed tones — keeps the rumour alive.

A Cultural Context

While the specific claim remains unconfirmed, social researchers have long observed that private, affluent suburbs can offer conditions conducive to discreet subcultures — including non-traditional social or sexual groups.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Australian society experienced significant shifts in attitudes toward sexuality and personal freedom. Suburbs with larger homes and fewer prying eyes often enabled residents to socialise more freely behind closed doors.

Rumours of swingers groups, “key parties,” or private social clubs have circulated in many wealthy areas across the country — some grounded in truth, others amplified by suburban folklore.

Mt Eliza Today

There is no current evidence that Mt Eliza hosts a public or organised swingers scene — but some suggest the culture has simply adapted to the times.

One long-time resident, Deborah (name changed for privacy), contacted STPL News to say the scene hasn’t disappeared — it’s just evolved.

The swingers scene is not at all gone, it’s just different,” she said. “In the 80s and 90s, it was all about who you knew — invitations, word of mouth. These days it’s far more discreet, with swingers apps and private communities.”

Deborah’s account reflects broader social shifts in how adult communities connect in the digital age — with greater privacy, and fewer public footprints.

While Mt Eliza no longer draws attention for any such activity, its legacy as a rumoured hotspot of suburban indulgence continues to spark curiosity and conversation.
