A former science teacher at McClelland College has been charged with child sexual offences, with the matter now progressing through the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

In a letter, McClelland College Principal Laura Dowdell Spence informed families that Orhan Sahin — who taught Year 7 to 10 Science at the Frankston school from 2023 until May 2024 — had been charged with serious criminal offences. Sahin also worked at the school in 2022 as a casual relief teacher.

The letter, intended for parents and carers, was subsequently leaked and began circulating on social media. In it, Principal Spence said the college was in the process of notifying families whose children may have attended during Sahin’s employment.

“I wanted to ensure you were notified of this very concerning news as soon as possible,” the letter read.

She acknowledged the emotional impact the charges may have on the school community and encouraged families to access the college’s Wellbeing Team and other listed community supports.

Victorian Institute of Teaching Disciplanary Action

The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) has since cancelled Sahin’s registration. As listed in the May 2025 Register of Disciplinary Action, Sahin is disqualified from reapplying for registration until 10 April 2030.

Court records confirm Sahin is scheduled to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 12 June 2025 at 9:30 AM for a mention hearing.

No further details of the charges have been released publicly at this stage. The case remains before the courts.

McClelland College has asked for sensitivity when discussing or sharing information about the matter in the community, citing the privacy and wellbeing of those directly affected and the importance of not interfering with the legal process.
