Somerville overcame a lacklustre start to defeat traditional rivals Pearcedale in the Round 4 MPNFL fixture at Pearcedale.

The biannual Postcode Derby always attracts a bumper crowd, and this fixture was no exception.

Pearcedale’s game plan was clear from the first contest, with the home side running in numbers to outclass a Somerville team that had few answers early.

Pearcedale piled on eight goals to Somerville’s one solitary goal in the first quarter to take a massive 47-point lead.

Enter Somerville coach Chris Gamble, who challenged his players in the strongest possible terms and demanded that each of them close down the Pearcedale runners and be fierce at the contest.

Somerville responded with a seven-goal-to-two second quarter, but remained in deficit by 12 points at half-time.

The second half saw a complete reversal, with Somerville shutting down Pearcedale’s running game while asserting its own strengths across the field to register a dominant and commanding team effort.

Somerville cashed in with a 13-goal second half to Pearcedale’s three.
