The Somerville Swooper’s MPCA season preview 2026–27 looks at the opening match-ups across all four divisions as Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association action returns this Saturday.
One season concludes and another begins, with the 35 member teams all desperate to start with a win.
The 2025–26 premiers, Mornington (Provincial), Old Peninsula (Peninsula), Crib Point (District) and Tyabb (Sub District), will be looking to continue their clubs’ success. The latter three teams have earned promotion to a higher division.
Meanwhile, Heatherhill, Main Ridge and Moorooduc, who were relegated in 2025–26, will be determined to rebound quickly and put some early wins on the board.
Each club knows the importance of locking in its structures to ensure the season is as successful as possible. Off the field, the president and executive committee set the standard, with the general committee rallying to the cause.
The coach, playing personnel and sponsors are all indispensable parts of the package. Club supporters also add to morale and provide support in a variety of ways.
Provincial Division: Mornington Meets Old Peninsula
Last season’s Provincial premiers, Mornington, take on Peninsula premiers Old Peninsula in what should be a cracking contest.
Elsewhere, Pines takes on Sorrento, Baden Powell faces Red Hill, and Langwarrin takes on Dromana.
Peninsula Division: Somerville Faces Seaford
Seaford is tipped to be a big improver with several notable recruits. It comes up against runner-up Somerville, who conceded grand final glory by a miserly four runs against Old Peninsula.
Proven players Jack Kennedy, Jack Barbour and Brad McDonald exit the Somerville team. In come Connor Smith, formerly of Gloucestershire, and former Premier fast bowler Dan Rogers, who is tipped to have opposition batsmen hopping around the crease.
In addition, Jason “Jugga” Nagel has returned to his home club, Rosebud, after seven years as coach. Former Somerville star and Dromana premiership coach Chris Robson replaces him.
Mt Eliza has recruited brilliantly and comes up against Long Island. It will be an emotional game as both clubs remember the legendary Brian McCue, who played in six premierships at Mt Eliza and three at Long Island.
Rosebud faces Balnarring after both played finals last season. Meanwhile, the promoted Crib Point will be out to stamp its authority against an always competitive Heatherhill.
District Division: Local Rivalries And Returning Stars
Carrum and Carrum Downs will battle for bragging rights.
Boneo, with proven Provincial stars Sam and Jack Fowler back at their home club, takes on Seaford Tigers. Southern Peninsula teams Rye and Flinders always lift a notch when they meet.
Sub District premiers Tyabb will face the relegated Moorooduc, who have recruited vigorously over the off-season.
Sub District Division: Mt Martha And Baxter Face Off
The highly fancied Mt Martha and Baxter will face off in what will likely be a closely fought contest.
Main Ridge will look to bank an early win in its new division against Frankston YCW, which will be looking to take the next step this season.
Delacombe Park is always hard to beat on its turf. It comes up against an experienced and hard-nosed Skye combination led by former Langwarrin premiership player Jake Prosser.
Pearcedale will be hoping to avoid the holiday crowds when it rolls into Tootgarook. Both clubs were at the crossroads last season but have worked hard to retain players and increase their depth.
Ballam Park has the bye but, encouragingly, has recruited extensively to cover a number of players who have exited the club.
MPCA Season Preview 2026–27: Six One-Day Rounds To Start
The MPCA Review Committee canvassed all clubs over the winter break and proposed that the first six rounds should be one-day fixtures.
The clubs adopted this proposal. In the view of this scribe, it’s a logical and well-thought-out decision made in consultation with the member clubs.
The general theme around Round 1 is to expect the unexpected. There are guaranteed to be plenty of fireworks!
