Frankston Hospital to Become Peninsula University Hospital in Major Health Shift

Frankston Hospital will become Peninsula University Hospital in early 2026, a change Peninsula Health says reflects its commitment to healthcare, research and medical training across Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula.

Frankston Hospital is set to undergo a major transformation — not just in name, but in purpose — as it becomes Peninsula University Hospital from early 2026. The move marks a significant investment in the future of healthcare, research and education for Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula.

The change coincides with the opening of the hospital’s new clinical services tower, a key part of efforts to grow Frankston into a leading health, education and research precinct.

A new chapter for local health services

The rebranding reflects a deeper integration between Peninsula Health and Monash University, aimed at creating a powerhouse for evidence-based treatment and medical training right on the Peninsula. It’s expected to deliver:

  • Better patient outcomes, with local access to research-driven care and faster roll-out of new medical practices.
  • More opportunities for students, thanks to increased clinical placements and specialist training across nursing, allied health and medicine.
  • A stronger local workforce, building skills and expertise in a region that continues to grow.

Peninsula Health CEO Helen Cooper said the new name isn’t just cosmetic — it’s a step towards reshaping the entire approach to healthcare in the region.

Peninsula University Hospital represents the future — it’s about smarter care, closer ties to research, and preparing our next generation of health professionals,” Ms Cooper said.

This partnership means people living in Frankston and across the Mornington Peninsula can benefit directly from cutting-edge medical research and a hospital environment that also teaches and innovates.”

Boost to local education and research

Already, more than 940 Monash University students have completed placements with Peninsula Health in the past year alone, delivering over 300,000 hours of clinical experience. Under the new Peninsula University Hospital banner, that connection will only deepen.

Professor Christina Mitchell, Executive Dean of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash, said the move cements Frankston’s role as a hub for medical research and education.

This is about embedding world-class research and training into everyday healthcare, right here in Frankston,” Professor Mitchell said.

We’re excited to help shape the next generation of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals in partnership with Peninsula University Hospital.”

A future-focused health precinct for the Peninsula

When complete, the new hospital precinct is expected to attract fresh investment in medical technology and research infrastructure — supporting both immediate patient care and longer-term projects tackling health issues like ageing, chronic disease and mental health.

For locals, it means a hospital that doesn’t just treat — it teaches, studies and continually improves how care is delivered.
