Porepunkah, Vic.Victoria Police have announced a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to the arrest of Desmond Freeman, also known as Desmond Filby, as the search for the fugitive continues into its second week. Police say the reward is the largest ever offered in Victoria for an arrest.

Fatal shooting of two officers

Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart-Hottart were fatally shot on Tuesday, 26 August after officers attended Freeman’s Rayner Track property at Porepunkah to execute a search warrant. A third officer was seriously injured but is now recovering at home.

The search warrant was part of an investigation by the Wangaratta Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team. The case is now being led by the Homicide Squad.

Extensive search effort

Over the past 12 days, more than 450 police officers per day have been deployed in a large-scale manhunt involving specialist units and personnel from multiple agencies. Despite these efforts, Freeman has not been located since he was last seen at his property shortly after the shooting.

Police say Freeman may be receiving assistance, which could allow him to travel beyond the immediate Porepunkah area. As such, authorities are warning that he could turn up in unexpected locations across Victoria.

Public warning: statewide vigilance required

Authorities are urging all Victorians to remain vigilant, stressing that the manhunt is not limited to the state’s north-east. Residents in areas such as the Mornington Peninsula and Frankston are advised to stay alert and report any suspicious behaviour immediately.

Freeman is described as last wearing dark green (khaki) tracksuit pants, a dark green rain jacket, brown Blundstone boots and reading glasses. He is believed to remain armed and dangerous. Police have warned the public not to approach him under any circumstances.

Given the terrain, the length of time and the need for supplies, we cannot rule out the possibility that Freeman is being assisted. We are keeping all options open, including that he could be alone, or has come to harm,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

Appeal for information

Anyone with information on Freeman’s whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or lodge a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au. Members of the public should call Triple Zero (000) immediately to report any sightings.
