Frankston City Council is ramping up efforts to curb hoon gatherings and illegal monkey bike use, launching a proactive safety campaign ahead of the busy summer period.
With warmer weather often leading to more activity on local roads and in public spaces, the council says it is working closely with Victoria Police and the community to prevent dangerous and antisocial behaviour before it escalates.
Cr Cherie Wanat said the focus was on deterrence rather than reaction.
“Frankston City is a vibrant, family-friendly city and we want everyone to feel safe and supported,” she said. “By working together with Victoria Police and our community, we’re staying one step ahead to keep these dangers off our streets and out of public reserves.”
Frankston is among the few Victorian municipalities that actively crushes illegal monkey bikes seized under its local laws. The council also runs joint operations with Victoria Police, deploys CCTV, and maintains dedicated reporting channels for hoon-related offences.
Under Frankston’s Community Local Law, anyone who participates in, encourages, or attends a hoon gathering without lawful reason faces fines of up to $500. It is also an offence to stop or park near a hoon event without a valid excuse.
Cr Brad Hill said community vigilance played a vital role in the council’s approach.
“A safe neighbourhood is built by people watching out for each other,” he said. “By staying alert and reporting suspicious behaviour, residents play a critical role in preserving the peace and trust of our community.”
Residents can report hoon activity or illegal monkey bike use by contacting Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Victoria Police on 000 in emergencies. Non-urgent reports can also be made to Frankston City Council on 1300 322 322.
