Three people have been rescued after emergency services responded to multiple reports of people in trouble in the water off Frankston Pier during last week’s heatwave.
Victoria Police said emergency services brought the three people to shore safely after the incidents were reported.
Police also received reports of people dangerously jumping off the pier into deep water.
In a public warning, police urged residents and visitors to take extra precautions near the water during extreme hot weather and windy conditions.
Police warning
“Police have responded to multiple reports of people in trouble in the water today off Frankston Pier.”
“Emergency services rescued three people, bringing them to shore safely.”
“Officers have also received reports of people jumping off the pier into deep waters.”
“Police would like to remind everyone to take extra precautions to stay safe near the water during today’s extreme hot weather and windy conditions.”
Staying safe near piers in hot and windy conditions
Authorities regularly warn that hot weather and wind can increase risk around the water, particularly near piers where conditions can change quickly and the water can be deeper than it appears from above.
Police are urging anyone heading to the foreshore to take extra care, supervise children closely, and avoid jumping into unknown water.
Anyone who sees a person in trouble in the water is urged to call 000 immediately.
