A Dandenong man has been charged over two separate fires that levelled community sporting facilities in Glen Waverley and Mount Waverley earlier this year, causing an estimated $4 million in damage.
Two Early-Morning Blazes
Detectives allege the first blaze broke out in the early hours of 16 April at Capital Reserve, where clubrooms used by local football, cricket and soccer teams were destroyed.
Just over two weeks later, another fire tore through a Mayfield Drive sports pavilion in Mount Waverley around 5 am on 3 May, leaving the building beyond repair.
Both facilities were well-used community hubs, and their loss has disrupted regular club operations and upcoming junior sporting seasons.
Arrest and Charges
Following a joint investigation by Monash CIU, police arrested a 31-year-old Dandenong man, charging him with two counts of arson and two counts of motor-vehicle theft.
He was remanded to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 7 November.
Ongoing Enquiries
Investigators have not ruled out further charges as they continue to examine possible links between the incidents.
Police are urging anyone with information, CCTV, or dash-cam footage from the area to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via crimestoppersvic.com.au.
