An 18-year-old Baxter man has been arrested after an allegedly stolen BMW was pursued across Melbourne’s southeast early Sunday morning.
Victoria Police said the incident began after offenders allegedly forced their way into a property on Beddoe Avenue in Brighton East about 3.45am on Sunday, 6 September, stealing keys for two vehicles.
A short time later, the offenders allegedly entered a property on nearby Union Street but fled empty-handed after being disturbed by an occupant.
BMW allegedly stolen from Brighton East home
Police allege the offenders returned to the Beddoe Avenue property about 4.20am and stole a white BMW.
A green Subaru was also allegedly stolen from a different property on Union Street.
Police Air Wing later spotted the BMW travelling at speed along Nepean Highway towards Mordialloc.
Ground units followed the vehicle through several suburbs before police pursued it on the Monash Freeway.
Stop sticks were deployed at Keysborough, but police said the BMW continued travelling on its rims.
The vehicle eventually came to a stop on the inbound lanes of the Monash Freeway at Glen Waverley, about one kilometre from Huntingdale Road.
Baxter man arrested
Victoria Police said the driver, an 18-year-old Baxter man, was arrested at the scene.
He was taken to hospital with minor injuries and was expected to be interviewed by police.
The arrest formed part of Operation Trinity, Victoria Police’s overnight operation targeting burglaries and vehicle theft across Melbourne.
Police said the operation runs from dusk to dawn and involves uniform officers supported by specialist units including the Air Wing, Dog Squad and Public Order Response Team.
Victoria Police has urged residents to keep homes and vehicles secured, saying offenders involved in residential burglaries are often opportunistic and look for unlocked doors and windows.
The investigation remains ongoing.
