Christine Leahy has officially taken office as the new Briars Ward councillor on Mornington Peninsula Shire Council, following a decisive by-election victory.

Leahy was sworn in at the Rosebud Council Chamber on Wednesday, 14 October, before Shire Chief Executive Officer Mark Stoermer.

According to the Victorian Electoral Commission, Leahy secured 6,525 votes (64.17 per cent) against fellow independent Sue Ellison-Whyte, who received 3,644 votes (35.83 per cent).

The vacancy arose following the resignation of controversial former Shire mayor and Briars Ward councillor Anthony Marsh, who was elected as the Liberal Member for Nepean in May.

Leahy will serve the remainder of the current council term, which concludes in October 2028.

Who Is Christine Leahy?

A Mount Martha resident of almost ten years, Leahy brings professional experience across business, health services and community organisations.

She holds a Commerce degree and is a fellow of Leadership Victoria’s Williamson Community Leadership Program.

During her campaign, Leahy identified responsible council spending, road maintenance, community safety and environmental protection as key priorities.

She also pledged to advocate for safer intersections, improvements to the Balcombe Estuary boardwalk and Birdrock Beach stairs, and upgrades to local sporting facilities.

New Briars Ward Councillor Welcomed

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Stephen Batty welcomed Leahy’s appointment.

Leahy said she was grateful for the opportunity to represent the community.

“I look forward to listening to the community, representing its priorities and contributing constructively to Council,” she said.

Her appointment restores the Shire’s full complement of 11 councillors, with Briars Ward representing Mount Martha and parts of Mornington.
