Mornington Peninsula aged care services will continue beyond June 2027 after the Shire Council reversed its planned withdrawal, retaining Meals on Wheels, community transport and group social support.

The decision, announced on 30 September, follows the Federal Government’s extension of the Commonwealth Home Support Program to 2029.

Council reconsidered its planned withdrawal at its 29 September meeting and resolved to retain the services.

Existing clients do not need to make alternative arrangements or take any action, according to Mayor Stephen Batty.

“Things will continue as usual,” he said.

Services continuing include meal deliveries, community transport such as Dial-a-Bus, and group activities including outings and excursions.

Why Council Reversed Its Decision

Council had previously decided to withdraw from Commonwealth-funded aged care at the end of June 2027, when changes under federal reforms were expected to begin.

Cr Batty said council had considered the new requirements beyond its capacity to meet. The extension of the existing program prompted it to revisit that decision.

He said the reversal would preserve services including Meals on Wheels, which the Shire has provided for 50 years.
