A teenager has been arrested following a dramatic incident involving a machete at Bayside Shopping Centre in Frankston on Tuesday afternoon.
Police say the disturbance began shortly before 2pm on 8 July, when a 17-year-old boy was involved in a heated discussion with four other youths inside the Beach Street complex. It’s alleged the teen revealed he was carrying a machete during the exchange.
According to police, the teen brandished the weapon before being chased through the shopping centre by the group. The situation escalated when the four youths caught up with him and allegedly assaulted him.
Members of the public quickly intervened, managing to restrain the 17-year-old until police and Bayside Security arrived on scene. This occurred even before triple-zero calls were made, highlighting the swift response by shoppers and staff.
The teenager was arrested and taken into custody, where he was later questioned and remanded by police on weapons and assault-related offences. The four other youths involved fled the scene on foot and remain outstanding.
Frankston police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could assist their investigation to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
