Former Herald Sun Chief Football Writer and Australian Media Hall of Fame member Mike Sheahan had a capacity house on the edge of their seats last Friday.
Mike headlined the annual Somerville Football Netball Club Business Luncheon, with ex-Australian cricket international and Somerville Cricket Club Life Member Shaun Graf assuming MC duties.
Sheahan captivated the audience as he recounted a plethora of memorable events, headlines of the day, and key players and personalities.

When asked about the most memorable headline, he quickly nominated the unprecedented transfer of 1979 and 1980 Brownlow Medallists Peter Moore and Kelvin Templeton to Melbourne FC in 1982.
He also named Wayne Carey as the greatest footballer of his era, and—perhaps a little surprisingly—Alastair Lynch as #2. “Four doesn’t go into three,” he quipped, allowing himself some licence by rating Gary Ablett Snr and Gary Ablett Jnr as equal third.
When it came to hard-nosed and, at times, downright scary players, Leigh Matthews stood clearly in front, with Bombers enforcer Roger Merrett regularly creating mayhem.
He also ranked the 1980s as the best era across the span of his career.

Now in its 17th season, the Business Luncheon is one of the highlights of the year for SFNC and the wider community, enjoying strong support from business owners and staff alike.
President Maddy Roberts and her leadership team are working overtime, with the positive vibe around the club helping to set up a strong future.
