Report by the Somerville Swooper
In a fluctuating and riveting contest during Round 7 of the MPNFL fixture, Crib Point nailed a goal with just 10 seconds remaining to clinch victory against traditional rivals Somerville, winning 12.7.79 to 12.6.78.
With Crib Point hosting a premiership reunion, their home ground was filled to capacity. The surface was in first-class condition, though a blustery wind made skill execution a challenge for both teams. At half-time, Somerville held a slender 2-point lead, bolstered by the return of key players Captain Mason de Wit and Tom Roberts, who provided class and leadership.
The third quarter was a continued arm wrestle, with Cribby edging ahead to lead by five points, 47 to 42. Goals were at a premium, with both defences standing strong despite multiple forays forward. Somerville’s chances were hampered by several 50-metre penalties, conceded through backchatting umpires rather than focusing on the task at hand.
The final quarter defied expectations, as both teams opened up with a more attacking style of play. It was goal-for-goal, with Somerville taking an 11-point lead with just two minutes to go. To their credit, Crib remained composed. A set shot from 40 metres on a tight angle by Archie Shepherd split the middle. Somerville attempted to slow the play and hold possession, but a critical turnover allowed Crib to surge forward. Towering ruckman Peder Whelan clutched a spectacular contested mark and iced the game with a goal, just 10 seconds before the final siren.
Both teams had their chances, but it was Crib Point who seized the key moments in a hard-fought contest, played in great spirit before a capacity crowd.
