About the 16 Days of Activism Campaign
The 16 Days of Activism campaign, held each year from 25 November to 10 December, is a global initiative established in 1991 to highlight gender-based violence and promote community-wide prevention efforts.
International Significance
The campaign begins on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and ends on Human Rights Day. Activities take place worldwide, with a focus on promoting respect, equality and safety.
Local March and Community Activities
Participants marched along the foreshore before gathering for presentations from community workers, support organisations and local representatives. Agencies provided information on family violence support, gender equality initiatives, youth services and legal assistance.
Community Reflections
Wallaroo Community House thanked participants for their involvement.
“It was great to come together in solidarity to march amongst the beautiful backdrop of Hastings foreshore surrounded by our wonderful community.”
The organisation acknowledged speakers, stallholders, volunteers, local councillors, Hastings MP Paul Mercurio and community members for supporting the event.
Western Port Councillors Stand Together
Councillor Kate Roper
Councillor Kate Roper said ongoing conversations about respect and safety remain essential. Her full statement read:
“16 days of Activism started today with the Respectful Relationships walk at Hastings Foreshore. We really need to continue to talk about this everyday. Experts and agencies were on hand to discuss and assist with issues of domestic violence, gender equity, support services and legal advice.
This is a huge issue across society and I thank those who attended today including my fellow Councillor Michael Stephens.”
Councillor Michael Stephens
Councillor Michael Stephens said the event highlighted free support services for people experiencing domestic or family violence.
“Today we joined the ‘Westernport Respectful Relationships Match’ at the Hastings foreshore.
Drawing attention to the many free services and help available for people experiencing domestic struggles and home.”
He also acknowledged speaking with Marcus from Western Port Secondary College.
Shire Support and Broader Themes
Mornington Peninsula Shire recognised Jillian West for delivering the Welcome to Country and thanked partner organisations supporting the 16 Days program. The Shire said initiatives would continue across the region.
Victorian and National Themes
This year’s Victorian theme focuses on respect as the foundation of violence prevention. National messaging also highlights technology-facilitated abuse as an emerging area of concern.
Campaign Continues Across the Peninsula
Events and community activities will continue across the Mornington Peninsula until 10 December, encouraging residents to engage with prevention resources and seek support when needed.
