Second Body Found On Mornington Peninsula As Police Investigate Rye Pier Death

Police are investigating after a man’s body was found floating near Rye Pier on Thursday morning. It was the second death reported on the Mornington Peninsula the same day, after police were called to a campsite in Rosebud earlier that morning.

Victoria Police said the man was spotted by a person fishing from Rye Pier, near Bay Trail, shortly after 8am.

What Police Say

Police said it is understood the person was fishing from the pier when they noticed the yet-to-be-formally identified man floating in the water at about 8.20am.

Victoria Police told STPL News the man was unclothed when he was located in the water.

Emergency services attended and police began investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

Investigation Under Way

Police said the investigation remains ongoing to determine whether the death is suspicious.

First Death Reported Earlier At Popular Rosebud Campsite

The Rye Pier discovery followed an earlier incident in Rosebud on Thursday morning.

Police said a passer-by located an unresponsive man at a campsite near Bay Trail just before 7am. Officers attended and the man was found deceased.

Police said that death is not being treated as suspicious at this stage, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Police have not indicated the two incidents are connected.
