“Back in my day, seats were optional” — 64yo Caught Driving BMW Missing a Few Essentials

A 64-year-old man has been pulled over in Cranbourne North after driving a BMW missing its bonnet—and using a plastic chair as a driver's seat. He faces traffic charges.

CRANBOURNE NORTH — A 64-year-old man has been left without a ride—and potentially facing charges—after police caught him driving a BMW with no bonnet and a plastic garden chair in place of a driver’s seat.

The curious scene unfolded about 3.15pm on Monday 21 July, when officers spotted the topless burgundy vehicle travelling along Greaves Road in Cranbourne North.

On closer inspection, police found the engine was fully exposed, the original seats had been removed, and the driver was instead perched on a backyard-style plastic chair, propped up with makeshift cushions.

The Narre Warren South man told police he was on his way to pick up car parts and admitted the vehicle was not roadworthy.

He was issued with a defect notice and is expected to be charged on summons with traffic offences.

The vehicle was not allowed to continue its journey.

Police reminded the public that operating a modified or unsafe vehicle poses serious risks and urged all drivers to ensure their vehicles meet roadworthy standards.
