Draft Design Revealed for Sorrento Playground at David MacFarlan Reserve

Mornington Peninsula Shire has unveiled the draft design for a new Sorrento playground at David MacFarlan Reserve. Locals are invited to provide feedback on features including slides, swings, sensory play and accessibility. Community consultation is open until 15 October 2025.

Sorrento, VicMornington Peninsula Shire has released the draft design for a new Sorrento playground at David MacFarlan Reserve and is calling on the community to share feedback before final plans are locked in.

The original playground was removed last year to make way for cricket nets, leaving a gap in play facilities for families and younger children.

What the Draft Playground Design Includes

The proposed Sorrento playground design features:

  • A central play unit with multiple slides, including single and double options.
  • Rope climbers, balance beams, and a variety of swings (infant, accessible and standard).
  • Sensory play panels integrated into landing areas.
  • Safety measures such as protective screening on the cricket net fence.
  • Wheelchair access and inclusive play elements.

Consultation and Community Input

The playground draft is open for public feedback until 15 October 2025.
Community members are being asked to consider:

  • How the playground will function during peak sporting use.
  • Whether shade, surfacing, and seating meet local needs.
  • Integration with other facilities like netball and cricket.

Why the Playground Matters to Sorrento

For families, the new David MacFarlan Reserve playground is more than equipment — it’s a safe, inclusive place for children to play while siblings take part in sport.

For council, it forms part of the broader David MacFarlan Recreation Reserve Master Plan, aiming to balance sport and recreation needs with open community use.

Outstanding Questions

  • Is the compact playground large enough for peak demand?
  • Will shade and shelter be adequate for all-day use?
  • How will ongoing maintenance of sensory panels and accessible swings be managed?
  • Are seating, toilets and pathways sufficient for all users?
