Fire Restrictions Ease In Frankston And On The Mornington Peninsula

Fire restrictions have eased in Frankston and on the Mornington Peninsula, with CFA confirming the Fire Danger Period ended at 1am on Tuesday 7 April 2026. The change means some private burn-offs can resume, but safety rules still apply.

Fire restrictions have eased in Frankston and on the Mornington Peninsula, with CFA confirming the Fire Danger Period ended at 1am on Tuesday 7 April 2026 for both Frankston City Council and Mornington Peninsula Shire Council. CFA’s current fire restriction dates page also lists both municipalities as having restrictions ended for this fire season.

The change means some landowners can again carry out private burn-offs as cooler autumn conditions set in. CFA said the easing was due to a mix of cooler nights, morning dew, some rainfall and new growth, which have helped lift moisture levels across the affected areas.

Despite the change, CFA has warned residents not to treat the end of the Fire Danger Period as a signal to relax completely. The agency said conditions can still lead to fast-moving grassfires, even in cooler weather, and urged landowners to make sure conditions are safe before burning off and to have enough water and resources on hand to extinguish the fire.

CFA says burning off vegetation is generally permitted outside the Fire Danger Period, but residents must still follow CFA rules and any local council laws, which can apply year-round. The authority also advises people to notify neighbours, check weather conditions, maintain a minimum three-metre firebreak, and ensure enough people are present to monitor and control the burn.

Residents planning a burn-off are also being told to register it with Triple Zero Victoria to help avoid unnecessary emergency callouts. Burn-offs can be registered online through Fire Permits Victoria if they start more than two hours later, or by phone if they are due to begin immediately.

For residents in more semi-rural and rural parts of the Mornington Peninsula, the change marks the usual seasonal shift into autumn property management. But CFA has made clear that fire safety obligations remain in place, and people travelling to other parts of Victoria should check whether restrictions are still active in those areas.
