Battin’s election comes after a turbulent period for the party, with tensions surrounding the handling of the Moira Deeming case under the leadership of John Pesutto. The decision to oust Pesutto was driven by growing dissatisfaction within the party room, particularly regarding his leadership and the fallout from the Deeming case, which had sparked internal divisions.
