The Victorian Government has announced the establishment of an independent Board of Inquiry to investigate the recent landslide in McCrae, aiming to uncover its causes and prevent future incidents.
In mid-January, a significant landslide in McCrae led to the evacuation of multiple homes and resulted in a council worker being hospitalised after a house collapsed and collided with neighbouring properties.
Premier Jacinta Allan emphasised the importance of understanding the incident, stating,
“We need to get to the bottom of what has happened here because too many people have been let down and too many questions remain unanswered.”
The Board of Inquiry will focus on determining the cause of the landslide, assessing whether it could have been prevented, and evaluating the effectiveness of previous measures taken to mitigate such risks in McCrae. The findings will guide recommendations to prevent similar events across Victoria in the future.
Minister for Local Government Nick Staikos highlighted the significance of community involvement, noting that the Inquiry will develop a process for locals to share their experiences. Details on how residents can submit their accounts will be released in the coming weeks.
The Inquiry is expected to deliver its final report later this year, providing comprehensive insights and recommendations to the Government.
