Victoria Police Alarmed by High Number of Drink Drivers Over Break

In a recent media release, Victoria Police have expressed serious concerns about the number of motorists driving under the influence during the Christmas/New Year period, despite an increased police presence and targeted enforcement efforts.

Analysis from the past three years reveals that nearly half of drink drivers detected on New Year’s Day were caught between midnight and 6am. Additionally, approximately two-thirds of those apprehended registered low to mid-range blood alcohol readings, indicating a widespread tendency for drivers to underestimate their intoxication levels or ignore legal limits.

The data suggests that many individuals are choosing to drive after consuming alcohol during New Year celebrations, creating significant risks for themselves and others. In response, Victoria Police will deploy their entire fleet of booze buses across New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Random breath tests will be conducted at various locations to deter drink driving.

The penalties for drink-driving are severe. First-time offenders with a low-range reading face a $593 fine and a three-month driving disqualification. They are also required to complete a drink driver behaviour change programme, install an alcohol interlock device for at least six months upon reinstatement, and maintain a zero blood alcohol requirement for at least three years.

Police are urging motorists to adhere to the law, highlighting the dangers of impaired driving and the potential consequences of reckless behaviour.
