Victoria Police Launch Major New Year’s Eve Operation

Victoria Police have announced a comprehensive operation to ensure public safety during New Year’s Eve celebrations across the state.

Starting today, a highly visible police presence will be deployed in key areas, including Melbourne’s CBD and popular coastal spots such as St Kilda, Geelong, Lorne, and the Mornington Peninsula.

The operation will involve thousands of officers working overnight to maintain order and will continue into New Year’s Day to promote responsible behaviour and safe travel home for all attendees. Specialist units, including the Air Wing, Public Order Response Team, Mounted Branch, Water Police, and Dog Squad, will support general duties police.

Transit police and Protective Services Officers (PSOs) will be stationed at Flinders Street and all 212 metropolitan railway stations, as well as key regional hubs in Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, and Traralgon, to ensure safe transportation for revellers.

From Monday, Melbourne’s CBD will be declared a designated area under the Control of Weapons Act, granting police additional powers to search individuals for weapons. Similarly, the popular coastal spots have also been designated as controlled areas for New Year’s Eve.

The ongoing Operation Roadwise, focusing on road safety, will continue until New Year’s Day. Highway Patrol units will conduct drug and alcohol testing to deter impaired driving. Recent reports indicate an alarming number of drivers have been caught drink and drug driving during the first phase of Operation Roadwise, with significant peaks between 3 am and 5 am.

Illegal fireworks remain a significant concern, with over 60 incidents reported last year, resulting in serious injuries and fires. Possession of illegal fireworks can lead to fines and prison sentences of up to five years.

Superintendent Troy Papworth emphasised the importance of responsible celebration, stating,

“We are well prepared for New Year’s Eve with thousands of officers working right across the state to ensure it’s a safe and enjoyable night for all.”

He urged celebrants to plan their travel, avoid driving if consuming alcohol, and look out for one another.

Victoria Police encourage the public to enjoy the festivities responsibly and assure that any individuals causing trouble will face a swift response.
