Boxing Day on the Mornington Peninsula marked the beginning of a hot and sticky summer, with temperatures reaching 36°C and high humidity levels. According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), this is just the start, as conditions are expected to intensify in the coming months.
The day started with mild conditions, but by midday, the Peninsula was enveloped in uncomfortable heat and humidity. Popular beach areas like Rye, Sorrento, and Mornington saw large crowds seeking relief in the water. BOM issued a Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds, gusting up to 90 km/h, but they brought no relief from the heat.
As temperatures only dropped to 20°C overnight, the sticky conditions made sleeping difficult for many. BOM reported that the high humidity would persist, making the night uncomfortable for anyone without air conditioning.
A Long Hot Summer Ahead
With the CFA declaring a statewide total fire ban, the Peninsula is facing a season of heightened fire risk, heatwaves, and strong winds. BOM forecasts more extreme conditions, and the community is urged to stay prepared.
As the sticky season continues, the Peninsula will need to stay vigilant, with more hot and humid days expected in the months ahead.
