Koala Deaths on Mornington Peninsula Roads Prompt Call for Caution

The Mornington Peninsula Koala Conservation group is urging drivers to exercise greater care on local roads after a devastating incident involving a koala mother and her joey on Coolart Road.

In a Facebook post on the 9th of January, the group reported that the pair, who had been monitored by the conservationists, were struck by a vehicle, resulting in the death of the joey. The mother, found with severe jaw injuries, had to be euthanised. The driver involved was reportedly distressed by the incident.

The post also contained several images of the now deceased koala mother and cub prompting the group to provide a warning before reading the post.

This tragedy highlights a growing issue during the holiday period, with koalas frequently falling victim to vehicle collisions on the Peninsula. According to the conservation group, two koalas are hit each week on average during this time, with most accidents occurring on arterial roads where speed limits exceed 80km/h.

Since September, 13 koalas have been killed on local roads, marking an increase compared to the same period last year. Conservationists warn that this number could rise further as the holiday period continues.

“Koalas are present in areas where people often don’t expect to see them,”

The post read.

“Education and awareness are essential to protecting these animals.

Drivers are being reminded to reduce their speed and stay alert, particularly in areas known for wildlife crossings. Visitors unfamiliar with the region are encouraged to be mindful of the local environment and adjust their driving to suit the conditions.

Anyone who encounters injured wildlife is urged to contact Wildlife Victoria’s emergency response line at (03) 8400 7300 or report incidents via their website at www.wildlifevictoria.org.au.

The conservation group is also encouraging residents to share this message with friends and family to help reduce the risk to local wildlife during the holiday period.
