In the Round 10 Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association fixture, Somerville recorded an important win against Seaford on their turf, 8/203 to 144.
In an extremely even competition, the victory elevated Somerville into the top four at the expense of Mornington, who were defeated by Mt Eliza.
Batting first, Somerville lost the prized wickets of skipper Kiefer Peries, Jack Barbour, and Isaac Harrison cheaply, but in came exciting 16-year-old opening batter Tom Ridout, who played an enterprising and timely innings of 57.
Ex-skipper Brad McDonald controlled the innings with a masterful 61, and then Master Blaster Jake Evans added a quick-fire 37.
A total of 203 looked very competitive, but with Seaford fighting to avoid relegation, the stakes were high.
After a rollicking start to their innings, with several balls dispatched onto the Frankston railway tracks, Seaford lost wickets at regular intervals. A brilliant run-out by Eagles’ keeper Jack Barbour set the tone.
Seaford skipper Matt Herbert flew the flag for his team with 33; however, the guile and skill of veteran Craig Black (3/27) smothered any legitimate Seaford rally. In a strong team effort, Ryan McNamara, Caleb Debnam, Isaac Harrison, and Matt Eager shared the remaining wickets.
The Round 11 fixture between Somerville and Mt Eliza at The Nest promises to be an absolute thriller. The winner will take a significant step toward securing a finals berth.
On Day 2 of the match, four premiership teams will gather to celebrate their achievements. The 1974-75 team will mark their 50-year premiership anniversary, with legends such as Shaun and Phil Graf, Ian Dennett, and Billy McMahon in attendance.
Ex-players, supporters, and club sponsors are invited to attend what promises to be a memorable day for Somerville Cricket Club.
