In what is predicted to be a tightly fought competition, with a number of teams boosting their chances through successful recruitment campaigns, both sides were desperate to kick off the season with a win.

With Chris Gamble backing up as coach and Maddy Roberts taking on the role of President, the club was confident of a positive start to the season, with huge numbers turning out for training and pre-season matches.

In tricky conditions and with a blustery wind impacting the game, Somerville always looked in control. However, inaccurate kicking for goal kept the opposition in the contest.

Luke Burton, Will Suhr, Lachie Fewster, Oliver Heavey and Mitch Mantell were named among Somerville’s best players, while match-winning captain Mason De Wit sizzled in the first half with four goals until he had to be interchanged due to injury.

A full house is always great to see — and packed it was — with a Past Players reunion and coterie group “The Villeans” rallying to the cause.
