Somerville Cricket Club Women’s Team on a Roll

The Somerville Women’s Cricket team has made a bold statement to their rivals in the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association.

In Round 12, Somerville took on the undefeated ladder leaders, Tooradin, in front of a packed house at home, with an estimated crowd of 150. In a riveting display of brilliant cricket, every team member contributed to recording the most important victory in the team’s history.

With emerging star Tilly Black compiling a brilliant 56, supported by sister Marlee with 41 and Dandenong Premier player Julie Fearns with 23*, the team total of 5/158 set a sizeable challenge for the rampant Tooradin team. In reply, the visitors scrambled to 100 all out, with Tilly Black taking 2/13, backed up by Lara Brittain, Kelly Burdett, Marlee Black, Julie Fearns, Christine Jeremiah, and Tahlia Love, all with one wicket.

In Round 13, Somerville was opposed by Balnarring in a vital game, which was most likely going to determine second position on the ladder, followed by a home final.

A moderate score of 7/114 may have proved difficult to defend, with Julie Fearns (18), Kasey Black (21), and Katelyn Van Loo (14) flying the flag.

In reply, Balnarring had their eyes firmly fixed on second position on the ladder but could only scrape together 9/74. Enter one of the competition’s most promising and dynamic players, 14-year-old Lara Brittain, who had the Balnarring batters running for cover. Lara finished with a match-winning 3/8 and was ably supported by Tilly Black, Katelyn Van Loo, Marlee Black, and Lacey Jeremiah, with one wicket apiece.

With one round remaining, Somerville is locked into second place and a home final.

The Women’s competition has added another dimension to the MPCA competition over the past few years, and all participants should be congratulated for the significant progress, which has clearly been evident.
