In the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association final round, Somerville Cricket Club comfortably defeated Seaford Tigers 213 to 127.
Somerville wanted to finish the season on a positive note after disappointing defeats to Moorooduc and top team Rosebud and included promising young opening bowler Sam Green in the lineup for his first game in the 1s.
Batting first, Somerville skipper Kiefer Peries set the tone with a punishing 45 and was well supported by Derbyshire all-rounder Isaac Harrison with a well-crafted 75.
In reply, Seaford Tigers made their intentions clear with a quick-fire partnership of 33 before debutant Sam Green put them on the back foot with three quick wickets. In a comprehensive team effort, Green returned the excellent figures of 4/39 and was supported by Jacob Evans (3/6), Isaac Harrison (2/28), and Luke Rowe (1/30).
In a very close competition, Somerville finished 5th on the premiership ladder and, on reflection, failed to capitalise when it counted. However, it defeated top-four teams Mornington twice and Mt Eliza, demonstrating its potential.
In the 2nds competition, Somerville comprehensively defeated Seaford Tigers 5/197 to 86. Brad Staff continued his strong season with 41 and 3/9, while emerging talent Taj Duggan shone with 29. Frankston Premier and ex-Somerville junior Nick Mann made a rare appearance for his home club and compiled a composed 54*. It’s Somerville v Mt Eliza in the Semi-Final this weekend, where Somerville will showcase a raft of promising junior cricketers who are ready to make their mark.
This weekend, the 1s Semi-Finals will feature Rosebud v Long Island and Mornington v Mt Eliza, with the winner of each game progressing to the Grand Final.
