Safety Beach Collision Sparks Outcry as Locals Demand Crackdown on Jet Ski Behaviour

ABC News reported earlier that three people have been hospitalised following two separate watercraft incidents, including a jet ski and boat collision, at Safety Beach on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

The first incident occurred around 2:00 pm on Saturday, with a man in his 20s transported to Frankston Hospital in a stable condition.

Just 30 minutes later, a more serious incident unfolded when a jet ski carrying three people collided with a boat near Marine Drive.

Two teenagers were injured in the collision. One was airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital in serious but stable condition with upper body injuries, while the other was taken by ambulance to Frankston Hospital in a stable condition. A man and young child on the jet ski were treated for minor injuries.

Victoria Police confirmed the jet ski and boat had been seized as part of an ongoing investigation into the exact circumstances of the collision.

Locals Call for Stricter Regulations on Jet Skis

The incidents have reignited frustrations among local residents, many of whom are calling for tougher regulations and better enforcement of jet ski use.

Comments from the Facebook groups like the Peninsula Notice Board reflect growing discontent.

One local remarked:

“Safety Beach is very safe — it’s the idiots on jet skis that are dangerous. They don’t care about the safety regulations. No problems the rest of the year, then the tourists arrive and boom, accidents. And I personally enjoy the tourist season; I just wish they would bring their brains with them.”

Others echoed similar concerns, citing frequent cases of speeding and reckless behaviour by jet ski riders. Calls are growing for increased patrols and harsher penalties to deter unsafe practices and prevent future accidents.

Soaring Temperatures See Rise in Water Rescues

The incidents come amid heatwave conditions driving a surge in water activities across Victoria. Life Saving Victoria reported 46 rescues and 35 medical incidents by 4:00 pm on Saturday alone.

Authorities are urging beachgoers to follow water safety guidelines, wear life jackets, and remain alert to avoid further tragedies.
