The Hastings Club constructed and funded by community volunteers since the 1960s was forced to close last October due to a major leak that went unrepaired for 5 months causing over $100,000 worth in lost bookings. As reported by the Somerville Times and Peninsula local (STPL NEWS), locals were absolutely shocked at the news of the closure. Board member Kevin Miles says in his view council’s lack of support and slow response compounded the club’s insolvency issues.
Yeah, that’s a lot of money that we’ve missed out on and well like we’re a non-profit club, so it’s not like we’re rolling in money. Yeah, so there’s just no financial help at all and yeah, we don’t begrudge any other clubs getting any money, but you know, the Sorrento Life Saving Club got on the news and within a month the council was giving them a million dollars and the state government gave them 4.5 million.
Community leaders claim it’s another example of inadequate investment and perceived neglect of Hastings and the Western Port townships.
