A new reusable dishwashing trailer will help local events on the Mornington Peninsula cut down on single-use waste, saving money and the environment.
Mornington Peninsula Shire has rolled out a new service aimed at helping community events go plastic-free — offering organisers access to a mobile dishwashing trailer, reusable tableware and other waste-wise tools.
A Practical Solution for Local Events
Markets, fetes and outdoor festivals can generate huge amounts of disposable waste — from coffee cups to food containers — and the cost of cleaning up often falls back on organisers.
The new Wash Against Waste trailer provides a practical alternative. It comes stocked with reusable plates, bowls, cutlery and cups, along with a high-capacity dishwasher designed for large crowds.
The system is operated by sustainability group B-Alternative, which already runs similar initiatives at major events across Victoria. The group will manage bookings, coordinate vendors, and oversee dishwashing on site.
Cutting Costs and Rubbish
For small community events, reducing waste isn’t just about the environment — it’s about cutting costs. Waste collection, bin hire and landfill fees can quickly add up, particularly for volunteer-run events.
By hiring the reusable trailer, organisers can eliminate thousands of disposable items and avoid contamination in recycling bins. According to the Shire, the service can cater for gatherings of up to 2,000 people.
Local organisers say it’s a welcome step.
“We’ve all seen what happens after a big event — overflowing bins, plastic plates everywhere,” said Somerville market organiser Sarah Collins.
“Something like this makes it easier for small groups to do the right thing without extra hassle.”
More Than Just a Trailer
The Shire has also introduced supporting resources to help event hosts improve recycling and reduce landfill waste. These include:
- Free “Bin It Right” signage kits to help attendees separate rubbish, recycling and compost correctly.
- Online guides and templates to assist with vendor communication and waste management planning.
- Subsidised trailer hire for eligible not-for-profit community events through the Shire’s community funding program.
Together, these tools aim to make sustainable event planning accessible to local groups — from school fundraisers to large outdoor festivals.
First Public Outing at Coolart Picnic
The Wash Against Waste trailer will be used publicly for the first time at the Coolart Community Picnic in Somers on Sunday, 2 November, running from 12pm to 5pm.
The family-friendly event will include live music, food stalls, and a gnome hunt, with organisers expecting a few hundred attendees.
