Victoria Police is calling on the community to secure their homes and vehicles this summer as new intelligence highlights a rise in aggravated burglaries and car thefts with the arrival of warmer weather.
According to data released by Operation Trinity, there has been a noticeable increase in opportunistic crimes over the past month, with unlocked properties and vehicles being prime targets.
From August 17 to October 18 this year, an average of 22 aggravated burglaries per week were reported where cars were stolen. While concerning, police note that this reflects a nearly 30% decrease in offending rates compared to the three months prior to the operation’s establishment.
Earlier in the year, crime statistics revealed significant increases in the region. The Mornington Peninsula recorded a 22.1% rise in crime, while Frankston saw a 17.6% jump.
Victoria Police urge residents to take simple precautions, such as locking doors and windows and securing vehicles, to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of these crimes.
