Victoria Police have returned to Cape Schanck this week as part of their ongoing investigation into the suspicious disappearance of 28-year-old Sergio Cuesta.
Detectives from the Missing Persons Squad commenced a targeted search today near the Gunnamatta Surf Club, with operations expected to continue into tomorrow. The area has been searched multiple times over the past 18 months, but police believe it may still hold crucial evidence.
Cuesta, a Colombian national, was last seen on 16 September 2023 after being dropped off by a male friend on Jabiru Drive in Chelsea Heights. A female friend reported him missing on 21 September when she was unable to make contact.
His disappearance is being treated as a homicide. In 2024, four individuals were charged with murder in relation to the case: a 50-year-old Mt Eliza man in January, followed by a 26-year-old Flagstone man, a 26-year-old Logan Reserve man, and a 24-year-old Flagstone woman in February.
Alleged Motive and Circumstances
Recent reports have shed light on the possible motive behind Cuesta’s disappearance. According to The Age, Cuesta was allegedly lured to his death following his involvement in the burglary of a $150,000 necklace. It is believed that those charged with his murder sought retribution for the theft, leading to the tragic events that unfolded.
Despite the charges, Cuesta’s body has not been located.
Police have not disclosed the specific information that led to the renewed search at Cape Schanck but confirmed it forms part of efforts to locate Cuesta’s remains and advance the investigation.
The search area includes coastal bushland and rough terrain, making the operation both logistically challenging and resource-intensive.
The investigation remains active, and police are urging anyone with information about Cuesta’s disappearance or the location of his body to come forward.
