Peninsula Aero Club Celebrates Aviation and Medical Milestone

The Peninsula Aero Club and Tyabb Airport will commemorate a remarkable chapter in aviation and medical history this Saturday, marking 50 years since a visionary project transformed emergency healthcare on the Mornington Peninsula.

The centrepiece of the celebration is the Angel of Mercy, one of the world’s first civilian helicopter ambulances, now restored and set to be unveiled where its lifesaving journey began in 1970.

This groundbreaking service was the brainchild of Dr. Tom Ready and Bill Vowell, whose innovation revolutionised emergency care. Before modern infrastructure, the Angel of Mercy’s swift aerial response provided a critical lifeline, overcoming the region’s challenging road conditions to deliver urgent medical aid and save countless lives.

The community is invited to join the festivities at the Peninsula Aero Club. Gates open at 10 AM, with a special ceremony scheduled for 11 AM. The event will feature live music, aircraft displays, and a free sausage sizzle, creating a vibrant celebration of courage, ingenuity, and enduring legacy.
