Oil Spill in Kananook Creek Prompts EPA Warning

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has issued a public warning after oil contamination was discovered in Kananook Creek, Frankston, near Allawah Avenue.

The notice, released on Tuesday, 21 January 2025 at 1:00 pm, advises residents and visitors to avoid contact with the creek water while investigations are underway.

In a statement shared on social media, the Kananook Creek Association stated the following:

“ATTENTION: EPA Officers are investigating oil in Kananook Creek in Frankston near Allawah Avenue. Avoid contact with the water until further notice. Signs and an on-water barrier are in place.”

The association also reminded the community of the legal and environmental consequences of improper oil disposal

“It’s illegal to tip engine or cooking oil onto the street or down stormwater drains. Store waste oil securely and have it collected by a licensed contractor.”

Kananook Creek Association made a public statement regarding the oil spill.

The EPA is working to identify the source of the spill, and further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
