A $50 million federal government pledge to improve roads in Frankston and the southeast has been called into question, with Liberal Dunkley candidate Nathan Conroy claiming the commitment is not as it appears, reports RPP FM.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the funding over the weekend, stating it would be used to upgrade the Nepean Highway, Overton Road, and Kananook Creek Trail. However, Conroy – a former three-time Frankston mayor – says he was shocked to later discover that the full amount was not guaranteed.
“He said, on national TV, we are going to invest $50 million – five-zero million – in the Nepean Highway. I almost cried. I was so happy. We were ready to go. We’ve been fighting for a long time,”
Conroy said.
“But now we hear it’s only $3 million. Three million dollars will not get you one-tenth of where we need to be. Labor have continuously, and proven even just on the weekend, that they say one thing and do another.”
Conroy’s comments raise concerns about the true extent of the funding commitment and whether the promised road upgrades will proceed as anticipated. The federal government has not yet responded to the claims.
