While debates rage across Australia and Victoria over the significance of January 26, the Mornington Peninsula Shire continues to embrace the day with inclusive and family-friendly celebrations. Unlike the 30% of Victorian councils opting out of Australia Day, as reported by the Herald Sun, our local community will gather to mark the occasion with events that honour both our nation’s history and the rich heritage of our First Nation people.
The Peninsula is fortunate to have a variety of events that cater to diverse interests and backgrounds, ensuring a day of connection, culture, and celebration for all residents and visitors.
Family-Friendly Fun Across the Peninsula
From the Dromana Foreshore to Rosebud and Sorrento, the Mornington Peninsula Shire has ensured there is something for everyone this Australia Day:
- Dromana Foreshore (Next to the Pier, 8.30 am–1.30 pm): A vibrant family event featuring live entertainment, activities for kids, and community spirit.
- Rosebud Aus Day Fun Run (Rosebud Village Green, 8.30 am–1 pm): Celebrate with a healthy start to the day at this popular community run, followed by festivities at the Village Green.
- Sorrento (George Street): A fun day with the family. FREE sausages, FREE lamingtons, live music, entertainment, and FREE face painting and games.
- Sorrento (Hosted by the Sorrento Portsea RSL and Rotary Club of Sorrento): A celebration of community and mateship in the beautiful seaside town of Sorrento.
- The Briars, (a First Nations event): With a focus on Indigenous education, cultural entertainment, food and sustainability through the theme of ‘Reignite our Spirit’, Our Survival Day 2025 will have something for everyone.
Acknowledging First Nations Voices at The Briars
The Briars will host a unique and meaningful Bunurong-led Aboriginal event, providing an opportunity for the community to celebrate and learn about the history, culture, and traditions of the First Nation people of this land.
This is an all-inclusive supportive space.
A Community That Celebrates Together
Unlike other councils that have bowed to political pressures and have banned or have distanced themselves from Australia Day, despite an overwhelming majority in support of Australia Day celebrations, the Mornington Peninsula Shire has demonstrated that it is possible to embrace the day with sensitivity and inclusivity. Leading by example, fostering unity and understanding through its thoughtful programme of events.
Whether you’re lacing up your running shoes in Rosebud, soaking up the seaside vibes in Dromana, or immersing yourself in the culture of our First Nations peoples at The Briars, Australia Day on the Peninsula promises to be an inclusive and meaningful day for all.
