McCrae Landslide: Residents Return Home to Find Houses Ransacked

Residents returning home after the McCrae landslide were shocked to find their houses ransacked. Authorities are investigating as recovery efforts continue.

Residents displaced by the McCrae Landslide have finally been allowed to return home, but for some, relief has turned to shock and anger after discovering their homes had been broken into and ransacked.

A Major Step Forward—But a Bitter Blow for Some

Mayor Cr Anthony Marsh described the return of residents to eight properties as “a significant step forward” after weeks of uncertainty. Engineers and surveyors have been working around the clock to assess the site, with the hope that more people will be able to return soon. However, Marsh made it clear that safety remains the top priority.

“Appalling Violation”

But in a cruel twist, some families came home to find their properties had been targeted by thieves.

“We are deeply saddened to report that several homes within the exclusion zone were broken into, ransacked, and had items stolen,”

Marsh said.

“This is an appalling violation at a time when these residents have already endured significant hardship.”

Security had been ramped up in the exclusion zone, with fencing, CCTV cameras featuring licence plate recognition, warning signs, and 24/7 private security patrols. These measures were put in place to assist Victoria Police, who are now investigating the break-ins.

Despite these efforts, criminals managed to get inside. Cr Marsh visited the affected residents and said he “shares their anger and frustration” over what has happened.

In response, the Shire’s Building Maintenance Team moved quickly to secure broken windows and doors.

“I commend them for their prompt action,”

Marsh said.

What Happens Next?

While some residents are settling back in, others remain in limbo. Engineers are still assessing the stability of 11 properties in the landslide zone, and authorities are working to restore power and water to affected homes. Temporary generators may be installed if power isn’t restored in time.

The Mayor assured residents that the Shire would continue working to get them home safely.

“Our community stands together in difficult times, and we remain committed to ensuring residents feel safe and supported as they rebuild and recover.”

Victoria Police are urging anyone with information about the break-ins to come forward.
